Moylegrove’s geology has been shaped by a collision of continents around 420 mllion years ago which formed:
- The Ceibwr Bay Fault, Moylegrove’s equivalent of the San Andreas Fault. This fault, marked by the two notches in the cliffs runs inshore towards Cardigan and shows much movement along the lines of the fault.
- The folding of the rocks at Cemaes Head
But the rocks that formed them were already 30-50 million years old at the time, and were recycled from older raw materials…
More recently, glaciers gouged and smoothed the area leaving huge deposits of material. Some just dumped their material, others had it sorted into sands, gravels and larger material by the beginnings of flowing water after the Ice Age.
All on our doorsteps!
