  • Conservation Genetics and Evolution
Dr Pablo Orozco Ter Wengel, Cardiff University
    Tue 14th Oct 2025 19:30
    £4; under-16s free
Climate change, the biodiversity crisis and how genetics can help with conservation.
Many species are headed for extinction worldwide. The loss of one species affects many others - including us - because of the interdependence of all their lifecycles. A species becomes more vulnerable to extinction when there's a reduction in the variety of genes in its population. Conservation genetics is the study of the genetic makeup of populations and their ability to adapt to changing environments. It shows how to strengthen threatened species by maintaining their genetic diversity.
Pablo is a population geneticist and evolutionary biologist working at the junction of genomics, bioinformatics, evolutionary genetics and conservation biology. His research group uses molecular biology to study the evolutionary history of species, to help address questions of relevance in wildlife, agriculture and habitat restoration.

  • Nevern Castle and the Lord Rhys
    Dr Roger Turvey
    Tue 31st Mar 2026 19:30

The role of the castle in promoting Princely Power
The Lord Rhys became ruler of Deheubarth - much of western Wales - in the late 12th century. Castles played an important part in defining, defending and extending his kingdom.
Nevern Castle, though originally built by the Anglo-Norman colonists, was substantially extended and rebuilt by Rhys to become an important administrative hub of Cemais. He was at one time briefly imprisoned there by his own unruly sons.
In this talk, we'll hear of the role of Nevern Castle in the military and political policies of the Lord Rhys towards the end of his reign.
