Pilgrimage – secular and sacred

From Wexford to St Davids – A talk with music and poetry In May, Ailsa took part in the Creative Camino – an eight-day journey on foot from Ferns in Wexford to St Davids. She was one of four artists in a group of ten people who made the pilgrimage. The story is told in a documentary film which encourages others to follow in their footsteps. The walk was part of the Ancient Connections project, which aims to encourage stronger links between the two Celtic regions of County Wexford in Ireland and Pembrokeshire. David Pepper is the Pilgrimage Officer for the Wales side of the project, led by the British Pilgrimage Trust. Modern pilgrimage, both secular and sacred, is the fastest growing travel segment in Europe, with many travellers now seeking to find deeper meaning in their journeys. Recent research carried out by Interreg Europe has shown that pilgrims can generate 2.3 times the economic impact of conventional tourists, but with a much lower environmental impact.

Brittle with Relics

– A History of Wales, 1962–97 In the closing third of the twentieth century, Wales experienced the simultaneous effects of deindustrialisation, the subsequent loss of employment and community cohesion, and the struggle for its language and identity. These changes were largely forced upon the country, whose own voice, rarely agreed upon within its borders, had to fight to be heard outside of Wales. This talk is based on Richard’s latest book, published this February with excellent reviews in the major media. Richard King lives in Moylgrove and mid-Wales. He is the author of several prize-winning books. No bookings required for this talk – just turn up! We look forward to seeing you.

Walk from St Dogmaels

To celebrate the re-opening of the path from Waunwhiod to the hairpin bend above Moylgrove, we’ll walk from the Coach House, St Dogmaels Abbey to the Garden Centre, where afternoon tea will be available. We’ll be joined by Delyth Jenkins, who will bring her celtic harp to play along the way. (Delyth has walked the 186 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path with her harp.) Wear decent boots and carry some water and a phone. Here’s a map of the walk. It’s about 7km (4.5 miles), initially along quiet roads and then fields. Please note, the footpath has stiles, no dog gates, and some livestock. If you would like transport either at the beginning or end of the walk, let us know in the booking form here. In the morning, the shuttle service will leave Penrallt Garden Centre at 10:30am. (However, if you’ve an easy way of arranging this for yourself, please do!) Arranged with St Dogmaels Footpath Association and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. Please book your place on the walk. There’s a joint booking form for the walk and the evening concert. In the evening, Delyth will be giving a concert in Moylgrove Old School Hall, with a… Continue reading Walk from St Dogmaels

Delyth – o Landoch i Drewyddel

Delyth Jenkins, one of Wales’ foremost performers on the Celtic Harp, celebrates the re-opening of the footpath from St Dogmaels to Moylgrove. As well as an internationally-known musician, Delyth is also author of That would be Telyn, an account of her 186-mile journey along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path with her harp. A Welsh supper will be served in the interval. Delyth’s albums (on sale on the night) have attracted glittering reviews, not only for her accomplished playing of the traditional music of Wales but also for her lyrical, original compositions which entrance and delight. Her recently-published book That would be Telyn tells the story of her 186-mile walk of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path with a small harp (telyn). Proceeds will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee. In the morning of the same day, there will be a walk from St Dogmaels Abbey to Moylgrove along the re-opened footpath. Read more. Y Felin – the St Dogmaels flour mill

The story of the traditional working water mill in St Dogmaels where stoneground flour is produced, told by the miller herself. There are records of the mill dating from the 1640s, but the millpond and mill have likely been there since the Abbey was built in the 12th century. The mill went out of use in the 1920s and the pond was filled with rubble. The site narrowly escaped having bungalows built on it. But in 1979, Michael and Jane Hall bought the mill, refilled the pond, and restored it to its original working state. The mechanism is entirely powered from the mill pond opposite the Abbey. Their daughter Emma now runs the mill. The range of flours produced at the mill is a favourite with many in St Dogmaels.

Since humans first learned to make and handle tools, they have employed their talents to develop surgical techniques, each time more sophisticated than the last; however, until the industrial revolution, surgeons were incapable of overcoming the three principal obstacles which had plagued the medical profession from its infancy — bleeding, pain and infection. Advances in these fields have transformed surgery from a risky “art” into a scientific discipline capable of treating many diseases and conditions. All seats booked
