Swifts
Swifts returning from Africa to nest and breed can be seen at this time of year – and heard, with their distinctive “squee, squee” call. Their migrations can clock up to 14000 miles each year. Swifts can fly at up to 70mph, their forked tails giving them the manoeuvrability required to catch insects in flight. They rarely rest on the ground – they eat, mate and sleep (with half a brain at a time) while flying. Superficially similar to swallows, swifts are more closely related to hummingbirds. Numbers of swifts in the UK have halved since the 1990s. Urbanization and modern building practices are principal causes of the decline.

Conservation Genetics and Evolution
Climate change, the biodiversity crisis and how genetics can help with conservation. Many species are headed for extinction worldwide. The loss of one species affects many others – including us – because of the interdependence of all their lifecycles. A species becomes more vulnerable to extinction when there’s a reduction in the variety of genes in its population. Conservation genetics is the study of the genetic makeup of populations and their ability to adapt to changing environments. It shows how to strengthen threatened species by maintaining their genetic diversity. Pablo is a population geneticist and evolutionary biologist working at the junction of genomics, bioinformatics, evolutionary genetics and conservation biology. His research group uses molecular biology to study the evolutionary history of species, to help address questions of relevance in wildlife, agriculture and habitat restoration.

Geology of Pembrokeshire
This landscape was 430 million years in the making – learn about how the rocks were formed and how to identify them. To enrol, call Andrew on 0785 515 4596. Carningli – once molten rock that welled up deep under a mountain range as high as the Himalayas, since washed away to leave the hills we see now. Old red sandstone near Dale, once iron-rich sand dunes, since compressed under hundreds of metres of rock, before being revealed again by erosion. Vertical strata near Castlemartin, cut flat by the waves. Quartz veins form in cracks deep underground when superheated water dissolves the silica in the rocks. When it eventually cools, the silica crystallizes in the cracks. The folded bands of rock at Pen-yr-Afr tell a story of many eras of mountains built and then washed down to the sea in layers gradually compressed under their own weight over 430 million years ago; folded into huge mountains by colliding continents 20 million years later; which have since been worn down by rain, ice and wind. Mwnt – where a dip in the bedrock (between the mound and this side of the cliffs) has been filled by rubble dumped by a glacier,… Continue reading Geology of Pembrokeshire

Uncovering a medieval priory
Life, death and battle scars St Saviour’s friary was founded by Dominican monks around 1256. But its exact location was never known until 2022, when DAT Archaeological Services carried out a 7 month excavation below what was the old Ocky White department store building in Haverfordwest. The archaeologists revealed the remains of a well-used cemetery, as well as the first phases of St Saviours Friary, established in the early 13th century. Some of the bodies discovered bore battle scars, prompting speculation that they were victims of Owain Glyndŵr’s siege of the town in 1405. The talk will be given by Fran Murphy, head of DAT Archaeological Services. Booking not necessary – just turn up

American History in 5 stories and songs
Stories you’ve never heard before – and songs like you’ve never heard them! Russell and The History Boys reveal a hidden history whose teaching is forbidden in many American schools. The culture wars in America have been very evident in the teaching of American History. The mention of slavery and other issues that might ‘disturb’ some people is forbidden by many states such as Florida, and by many local school boards. But at a time when understanding America and its history and place in the world has never been more important, it’s important to understand the whole story. This talk will cover five stories you’ve never heard or have only heard one side of. It’s a look at the American story: rich, diverse, messy, confused, arrogant and self-conscious. In other words, a place full of humans. Russell Walker is an American by birth, Welshman by choice, Speech Therapist by profession, and historian by love and preference. He has taught history on US Navy vessels, through the Bristol City Council Adult learning program and on-line during COVID. He will be offering face-to-face classes here in the Autumn. This is a shameless advertisement for those classes. Typical American! AND songs by THE… Continue reading American History in 5 stories and songs

Bike Odessey
We are Albert and Rose. A musician, a crafter, a maker, an artist, recyclers, creatives, generalists. In the summer of 2017 we both quit our jobs and parted with most of our belongings in preparation for a life on the road, neither of us had any idea how long we would be on the road or where exactly this road would take us. For 4 and a half years we lived a nomadic life. Cycling, volunteering, camping. Our main mode of transport was two second hand bikes we bought in Budapest. We share a passion for making and try to make as much of what we need/want as we can. We travel to experience new ideas and take in unknown places. We tread as lightly as we can on this earth. We wild camp. We forage. We ferment and bake. We embrace the road and relish in the slowness of life. In this talk we will share the ups and downs of our long bike trip, logistics of wild camping, how to do it on a low budget, the preparation needed for cycling long distances and everything in between.

The Geology of Moylgrove
Moylegrove’s geology has been shaped by a collision of continents around 420 mllion years ago which formed: But the rocks that formed them were already 30-50 million years old at the time, and were recycled from older raw materials… More recently, glaciers gouged and smoothed the area leaving huge deposits of material. Some just dumped their material, others had it sorted into sands, gravels and larger material by the beginnings of flowing water after the Ice Age. All on our doorsteps!

Apple juicing
Come with your apples (and bottles) and get them juiced! Here’s how it works Bring along apples and bottles Bring as many undamaged apples as you want to juice. We can’t juice bruised or damaged fruit but funny looking fruit is fine! We’ll give the apples a quick wash but if you have time to wash them in advance, that will help. Bring bottles or other containers with lids, to take your juice home with you. What happens on the day When it’s your turn, we’ll weigh the apples, give them a quick dunk in some water then send them in to the “scratter,” to turn them in to pulp. After that it’s bottles at the ready as we turn the pulp into juice. We’ll measure what we juice, and it costs 50p litre. We’ll pour the juice into your containers. to take home. You can also take some pulp home for the compost heap if you’d like to. The juice isn’t pasteurised, so you need to keep it in the fridge and drink it in a couple of days. Or you can pasteurise it at home easily. We’ll have leaflets on how to do that on the day. The day… Continue reading Apple juicing
